Following the yearly updates issued by the leading cricket body on Monday, Australia was able to hold onto their top spot in the Test Team Rankings, while India continued to hold the top spot in the ICC Men’s ODI and T20I rankings.
Following the yearly update, a record 100 teams are listed in T20Is according to the most recent rankings, which give all matches played since May 2024 a 100% rating and those from the preceding two years a 50% rating. India is now at 124 rating points, having increased their lead from 12 to 15 points at the ODIs yearly update.
After losing an away series against Sri Lanka in August 2024, India had a good year that culminated in their triumph in the 2025 ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, which included a 3-0 home series victory against England.
The Champions Trophy runners-up, New Zealand, have moved up to second position, just ahead of Australia. However, Sri Lanka has improved the most, moving up two spots from sixth to fourth, overtaking South Africa and Pakistan. Afghanistan has surpassed England, while the West Indies has surpassed Bangladesh to claim ninth place.
Even though their advantage over Australia has shrunk from 10 to nine points, India is still leading the T20Is. They won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup last year, and they also swept Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in 3-0 series and defeated England, South Africa, and Zimbabwe in other series.
The top six remains unchanged, with South Africa, two-time champions West Indies, New Zealand, and 2022 winners England in that position. 2014 winners Sri Lanka moved up to seventh place, surpassing 2009 winners Pakistan, while Ireland moved up to eleventh place, ahead of Zimbabwe.
Canada’s nine-point leap puts them in 19th place and ahead of Oman, who are the worst losers in terms of ranking points, after dropping eight points. This is the largest increase in terms of rating points.
Since all 100 countries have participated in at least eight Twenty20 Internationals over the last three years, the Bahamas (up eight spots to 51st) and Estonia (up seven spots to 61st) are the greatest winners in the yearly update. There were 80 rated teams in 2019 when the global rankings were introduced.
In the meanwhile, Australia, who defeated India 3-1 at home in their most recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy series before winning 2-0 in Sri Lanka, maintains their top spot in Tests with 126 rating points, but their margin has shrunk from 15 to 13 points.
Following 3-0 victories over the West Indies and 2-1 series victories over New Zealand and Sri Lanka, England has risen to second position. The elimination of their 2021–22 results, in which they lost all three series, has boosted their ranking more than these wins.
Only ten teams are now listed, and South Africa and India have fallen one spot each to third and fourth position, respectively. The other spots are still unaltered. Afghanistan has to play three more matches to make the list, while Ireland needs to play one more Test match in the next year to get a rating.
