Caitlin Clark has been mocked by Angel Reese's mother as the intense rivalry between the two players reignites ahead of the 2025 season. The dates back to the 2023 NCAA Championship game when Reese's LSU Tigers triumphed over Clark's Iowa Hawkeyes - and Reese celebrated with some taunting gestures towards the point guard.
Although both athletes have downplayed the incidents as mere competitiveness, the narrative has persisted into their professional careers. Now, Reese's mother - also named Angel - has stoked the flames just 10 days before the new season commences. Clark revisited her old college haunt last weekend when her Fever team faced off against the Brazil national team in an exhibition match at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The friendly match eager to see the 23-year-old display her prowess on the court.
This attendance figure was praised by Clark's fans on social media, catching the attention of the Chicago Sky star's mother, who couldn't resist taking a swipe on X. Posting on the social media platform, the elder Reese wrote: "Aww that certain fan base looking in the stands celebrating 'attendance' while others are looking up in the rafters celebrating championship banners.
"We ain't the same. Different year same haters - Have a great day."
Yet, Clark's supporters have the Rookie of the Year award to taunt the Sky player with, as she outperformed all fresh talent - Reese included - to snatch the sought-after award last year.
When the new 2025 season kicks off in less than two weeks, all eyes will be on Clark and Reese as they face each other once again. Indiana will host Chicago at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse on May 17 to kick off the new campaign.
The anticipation is palpable among fans eager to witness yet another thrilling season packed with intense rivalry and exhilaration throughout the WNBA - and this pair is at the forefront of everyone's mind.
Despite their fiery on-court dynamic, both stars have previously shown mutual admiration, with Reese confessing her desire to share the courtside with her rival someday.
In 2024, the 23-year-old shared: "Me and Caitlin have been playing against each other since we were kids.
"It's just a full circle moment of how women are viewed when it comes to trash talking and it's okay, in men's sport. So we're going to normalise that in women's sports as well. It's just super competitive.
"I think we're two great competitors. We brought a lot of fans to this league, and I thought, we're going to continue to do that and one day, hopefully we can be team-mates."
Clark openly expressed her admiration for Reese as well, praising her competitor in a Time magazine interview after she was honoured as Athlete of the Year for 2024.
Speaking about their rivalry, Clark remarked: "I don't get that at all. We're not best friends, by any means, but we're very respectful of one another.
"Yes, we have had tremendous battles. But when have I ever guarded her? And when has she guarded me?"
