New Delhi: Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer revealed on April 30 that Glenn Maxwell was recovering from a fractured finger. Subsequently Maxwell was declared unavailable for the remainder of the 2025 IPL season.
Punjab Cricket acquired Tasmanian all-rounder Owen for 3 crore INR. This follows Owens impressive performance including a record-equalling century in the 2024/25 BBL final and leading mens T20 run-scoring with 646 runs at a strike rate of 185. He is also a medium-pace bowler.
Owen signed with a new team while still under contract with Peshawar Zalmi in the current Pakistan Super League (PSL). His PSL performance to date includes 101 runs from seven matches (at a 198 strike rate) and two wickets.
Peshawar Zalmi (PZ) have three remaining league matches: May 5th versus Multan Sultans May 8th versus Karachi Kings and May 9th versus Lahore Qalandars. Currently fifth in the standings PZ retain a slim possibility of playoff qualification scheduled for May 13th 14th 16th and 18th.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) have upcoming matches against Lucknow Super Giants (May 4th) Delhi Capitals (May 8th) Mumbai Indians (May 11th) and Rajasthan Royals (May 16th). The IPL playoffs are scheduled for May 20th 21st 23rd and 25th. Currently second in the standings with three games remaining PBKS are strong contenders for a playoff spot.
Owens participation in two leagues potentially creating a scheduling conflict will be resolved by his joining Punjab Kings (PBKS) only after completing his season with Peshawar Zalmi (PZ) in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025.
Pakistans participation in the tournament will determine Owens availability for Punjabs remaining league games and potential playoffs. If Pakistan fails to reach the top four Owen will be available; otherwise his IPL participation will be delayed.
Mumbai Indians signed Corbin Bosch earlier this year as a replacement for the injured Lizaad Williams. Boschs signing required him to relinquish his Pakistan Super League (PSL) contract resulting in a one-year PSL ban.
The report suggests Owen will honor his current PSL contract unlike Bosch who faced a ban for contract breach. Therefore Owen is not expected to be banned.
