Milan, Italy After defeating Barcelona 4-3 in their second-leg match at San Siro, Milan, on Tuesday night, Inter Milan secured their spot in the championship match thanks to an extra-time goal from Davide Frattesi in what ended up being one of the most spectacular UEFA Champions League semifinals ever.
After a 3-3 draw in their first game, Inter Milan defeated Barcelona 7-6 on aggregate to win their fourth UEFA CL championship and their first since the 2009–10 campaign.
With a 2-0 advantage in the first half, Inter Milan had it all under control. Lautaro Martinez broke the tie in the twenty-first minute. Hakan Calhanoglou’s penalty convert just before halftime increased the home team’s advantage.
After seeming defeated in the first half, Barcelona came back to win the game in the second half. Barca’s first goal of the game came via a volley from Eric Garcia in the 54th minute. Dani Olmo’s strong header in the 60th minute gave the game a fresh lease of life and brought the score level at 2-2.
The 87th minute was when Raphina worked his magic. His rebound struck the far corner of the goal after Yann Sommer had stopped his first attempt to score, giving Barcelona the lead in the game and on aggregate.
After being sent off the pitch for the last few minutes, Francesco Acerbi scored his first goal in European football history to send the game into extra time, proving that his confidence was well-founded. Their advantage lasted only five minutes, thus the happiness for Barcelona fans was short-lived. The final score was 6-6, with a 3-3 scoreline.
Frattesi’s stunning strike in the 99th minute gave Inter Milan the lead both in the game and overall, enabling them to go to their second UEFA Champions League final in three years. He joined a huge group of ecstatic and relieved home supporters in their celebrations by scaling the metal barricades to commemorate this amazing occasion.
As reported by Sky Sports, the Inter Milan manager remarked after the game, “First of all, I have to congratulate Barcelona – a really strong team.”
“It took a tremendous Inter; these players deserve a round of credit for their two incredible performances. Being their coach makes me joyful. They threw everything at me. Their enjoyment of their achievement at this arena is understandable. We had various challenges, but we overcame them all with heart. We made an effort to play it using our strengths.
“We had a strategy in place after the first leg, but you can’t succeed without our collective sacrifice and support. “This final is something they [the players] deserve,” he said.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, however, said that his squad deserved to make it to the finals, but their players could still take pride in their work.
“I am aware that everyone is now disappointed. This game cost us a lot of money. My team gave it their best, and for that I am personally proud. “Next season, we’ll be back to try to win the Champions League,” Hansi said.
“You want to return after seeing the ambiance of tonight’s game. The outcome must be accepted. The attackers for Inter are powerful and seasoned. Our crew is young, and we will become better. It is our responsibility to continuously improve this team. We can become better at both attacking and defending.
“As a team, we performed better in the second half than in the first. Even though this is a difficult loss, we must rise to the occasion. I wish to convey this message to my teammates. My teammates, in my opinion, deserved the championship. They may have a great sense of pride when they see themselves in the mirror tonight,” he said.
