[India] Mumbai (Maharashtra) Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill became the third Indian Premier League (IPL) captain to reach 500+ runs in a season before turning 26. He joined the exclusive group of batting great Virat Kohli and middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer.

During Tuesday’s IPL match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium, Gill achieved this achievement. The weather hindered the run-chase of 156 runs, but Gill produced a captain’s knock, hitting 43 in 46 balls with three fours and a six.

With a strike rate of over 152 and five fifties, Gill has amassed 508 runs at an average of 50.80 in 11 IPL 2025 games. 90 is his highest possible score. He has scored the third most runs this season. He is presently 25 years and 241 days old, making him the third skipper to score 500 runs in a season before turning 26.

When Virat was 24 years old and in his maiden season as captain in 2013, he became the first skipper to score 500 or more runs in a season before turning 26. With 634 runs in 16 games at an average of 45.28, a strike rate of 138.73, six half-centuries, and a maximum score of 99, Virat was the third-highest run scorer of that season.

The feat was duplicated in 2020 by a 25-year-old Shreyas, who played for the Delhi Capitals (DC), scoring 519 runs in 17 games at an average of 34.60, a strike rate of over 123, three fifties, and a top score of 88*. He was instrumental in his team’s march to the championship game and finished the season as the fourth-highest run scorer.

Before the game, GT chose to bowl first after winning the toss. As wickets came often, MI was limited to 155/8 in their 20 overs, with the standout being a 71-run partnership between Will Jacks (53 in 35 balls, with five fours and three sixes) and Suryakumar Yadav (35 in 24 balls, with five fours).

Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Arshad Khan, Rashid Khan, and Gerald Coetzee each claimed a wicket, but Sai Kishore (2/34) was GT’s best bowler.

Both teams had a wild ride throughout the run-chase. GT did lose Sai Sudharsan early in the match, but they rallied with a 72-run partnership between captain Gill (43 in 46 balls, three fours, and a six) and Jos Buttler (30 in 27 balls, three fours, and a six).

According to the DLS Method, a rain break was taken with GT ahead in the 14th over, when they were 107/2. When another rain break began, MI had returned to the game thanks to the efforts of Trent Boult (2/22) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/19), who had reduced GT to 132/6 in 18 overs. GT was behind this time.

With one more over remaining, the updated aim was 147 runs when play eventually resumed. In a thrilling final-ball match, Rahul Tewatia (11*) and Gerald Coetzee (12) completed the task for GT by themselves, winning by three wickets.

With eight victories, three defeats, and 16 points, GT leads the field, while MI is in fourth place with seven wins, five losses, and 14 points. Finally, they break their six-match winning run.

The ‘Player of the Match’ title went to Gill.
