Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport has resumed operations on its runway RW 28 after a prolonged closure lasting several weeks. The reopening, which occurred on Tuesday, marks a significant milestone for the airport and its stakeholders, as it reinstates a crucial corridor for air traffic. The runway had been temporarily shut down for extensive renovations and maintenance, aimed at enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

In order to improve aircraft landing capabilities in low visibility conditions, especially during foggy winters, Runway 28/10 was closed to upgrade its Instrument Landing System (ILS) to CAT III-B requirements. Authorities accelerated the reopening because the closure and unusual easterly winds caused significant interruptions to aviation operations.

The runway was officially handed over to Air Traffic Control (ATC) at 8:04 AM on May 6. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) stated that this move would streamline operations and facilitate smoother arrivals and departures amid varying wind conditions. The ILS upgrade work is scheduled to resume in mid-June, with a planned closure from mid-June to mid-September 2025, post the peak tourist season.
