Union Minister of State for Telecommunications Chandrashekhar Pemmasani on Tuesday allayed fears of any threat to existing telecom service providers, saying that approving Elon Musk-led satellite internet provider Starlink is a complex issue but it is in the final stages.

Speaking to reporters during the India Telecom program, the Union Minister said that the government's security norms for satcom are important, especially in the current scenario when enemy country Pakistan is trying to hack India's system.

When will Starlink's service start

The minister said this is a slightly complex issue (permit for Starlink). We have to look at it from many angles. Security is one of them. Of course, since it is in the final stages, we will reconsider it. He said that Starlink's role in connectivity will be very small compared to traditional telecom networks.

Starlink has 50 lakh customers worldwide.

Pemmasani said, Starlink or others, I wanted you to understand that the number of Starlink customers all over the world is less than 50 lakh. It is not much. If you look at the speed and other things, it is much slower than the traditional network. One should not worry too much about the arrival of Starlink, its acquisition, and all these things. People do not understand this.

He said that whether it is Starlink or other satellite communication companies, its main purpose will be to connect remote areas where it will be difficult to reach our traditional network and it will be mainly for indoor connectivity and not for mobile services.
