Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a thrilling match at Eden Gardens on Wednesday (7 May). The team, which was coming after winning three consecutive matches, suffered a big setback with the defeat. Chennai spoiled Kolkata's playoff equation. The team had scored 179 runs for 6 wickets thanks to captain Ajinkya Rahane's 48 runs. CSK achieved 180 runs with two balls to spare by hitting a six in Mahendra Singh Dhoni's last over.
Chennai's team had a very bad start against Kolkata and lost 6 wickets for just 127 runs. Dewald Brevis played a fiery innings of 52 runs in 25 balls and brought the team back into the match. Shivam Dubey's 45-run innings snatched the match from Kolkata. The team needed 8 runs in the last over, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit a six on the first ball itself. Anshul Kamboj ended the match by hitting a four on the fourth ball.
KKR's playoff equation
This defeat has made the hopes of defending champions KKR to make it to the top-4 extremely difficult. KKR now has 11 points from 12 matches and only two matches are left in the group stage. If the team wins all the matches, then it can reach a maximum of 15 points. Even two wins will not guarantee qualification. After the win, the team will have to hope that Mumbai Indians (MI) lose both their remaining matches against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC). Apart from this, they will have to hope that the DC team loses by a big margin against PBKS and GT and then beats MI on May 15.
