The ongoing tension following cross-border strikes between India and Pakistan has raised serious concerns about the safety of IPL 2025 matches in India.
On May 8, the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, scheduled at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, was abruptly called off due to a power outage. A malfunction in one of the floodlight towers disrupted play, ultimately leading to the cancellation.
“Due to a power outage in the area, one of the light towers at the HPCA stadium malfunctioned. BCCI regrets the inconvenience caused to the in-stadium attendees,” a BCCI statement read.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the situation, explaining that the decision wasn’t purely due to technical failure, but also because of the rising border tensions.
“The situation is not stable at the moment, and that is why we have cancelled today’s match — not just in Dharamsala, but also due to escalating tensions from the neighbouring country. The safety of players, spectators, and support staff is our top priority," Saikia told .
To ensure the safe travel of players and officials, the BCCI arranged a from the nearest station in Una to transport everyone from Dharamsala to Delhi.
Will IPL 2025 be moved?
Earlier, the Pakistan Super League was due to similar security concerns. Now, with uncertainty looming over IPL 2025 venue, speculation is mounting that the tournament could also be relocated, potentially to South Africa, as was done in the past. However, no official decision has been made yet.
IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal spoke to RevSportz, stating, "No decision has been taken on the IPL. We are looking at the situation, which is fluid. We are in constant touch with the government. If any decision is taken, that will be communicated."
On Thursday night, Dhumal also spoke to PTI, confirming that the match is 'on as of now'.
"Yes, it is on as of now, but obviously it is an evolving situation and any decision will be taken keeping the best interest of all stakeholders in mind."
According to the schedule, the next match of IPL 2025 was supposed to be played between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 9 in Lucknow. However, on Friday, the BCCI that the tournament would be suspended until further notice.
