Citing ongoing national tensions and worries along the India-Pakistan border, the state has chosen to have no celebrations on Saturday, the fourth anniversary of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government’s tenure.

Chief Minister Sarma said that a news conference to highlight significant accomplishments during his term would take the place of lavish celebrations. He underlined that the low-key celebration was chosen in support of the country’s present security situation.

“The Assam government has chosen to mark this milestone with restraint given the ongoing national concerns and the situation at the Pakistan border,” Sarma said.

Sarma used social networking site X earlier in the day to urge people to be on the lookout for misinformation efforts. As responsible citizens, let’s REJECT false news from special interests, REPORT anyone attempting to weaken our armed forces, and COMPLY with official directives as India stands together under the leadership of Hon. Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji. Insha’Allah,” he wrote.

The request coincides with heightened awareness after a statewide security assessment and recent escalations along the Line of Control. Assam is among the states that have stepped up monitoring and urged people to refrain from disseminating unconfirmed information.

As a show of respect and prudence in light of the delicate geopolitical circumstances, Sarma also urged organisers to postpone any Bihu festivities planned for May 10 onwards.
