Matthew Mott is set to take over the head coach role at from Charlotte Edwards in the Women's Big Bash League this summer. Edwards stepped down previous month after taking up her new rol as England Women's head coach.
Mott will continue to serve as assistant coach for the men's side in the Big Bash League. This move will mark Mott's return to women's cricket after three-and-a-half years. He was Australia Women's coach from 2015 to 2022, enjoying quite a lot of success with one of the most powerful entities in women's cricket.
The Sixers announced on Friday, May 9, that Mott had signed a two-year contract with the franchise. Since his removal from the English men's white-ball setup, Mott has become increasingly involved in the franchise setup. The 51-year-old is currently with Delhi Capitals as their assistant coach. He will coach Seattle Orcas in Major Leage Cricket this summer.
Mott shared his joy of being granted the opportunity of coaching the Sixers. He was excited for working with the unit in a bid to secure a WBBL title at the earliest.
"I'm absolutely delighted to be working with the Sixers women's team. I've had a strong connection with the club over many years, so when the opportunity came up, it was one I was really keen to take on. Having coached a number of players in the current squad, I'm looking forward to reconnecting with them - as well as working with some of the younger talent - as we push to secure another WBBL title," stated Mott, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Mott had his eyes set at the WBBL draft and aimed to bolster the squad.
"The list is already stacked with talent, including players who've achieved success at various levels. We're looking to build on that at the draft and put ourselves in a position to bring home a championship again this season," added Mott.
