proved his captaincy credentials again in the build-up to crucial semi-final second leg against . The Red Devils hosted Athletic at and needed another fierce atmosphere to get over the line, despite holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Bilbao.

United booked their spot in the May 21 final against Tottenham Hotspur by storming to a 4-1 victory on the night, fighting back from a goal down. Mikel Jauregizar's long-range strike on the half-hour mark sparked nerves and dread after the chaotic scenes in the quarter-final triumph over Lyon.

However, Mason Mount scored twice off the bench - on either side of Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund's goals - to seal a return to the San Mames Stadium later this month.

United's second-ever tifo display before kick-off helped stir the emotion around Old Trafford, as it did in the lead up to their iconic meeting with Lyon in the previous round.

And like they did with the first tifo, the club consulted with fan groups and captain Bruno Fernandes over the design, which impressed again as part of a firework show.

The Europa League trophy accompanied the words "take me home United road" below an image of the team celebrating Harry Maguire's last-gasp winner against Lyon.

Stretford End Flags were involved in the process and later revealed that Fernandes requested a change to the initial design.

The Portuguese maestro is said to have asked for the tifo to focus on the entire team rather than individual players or goal scorers, an approach United reciprocated.

Fernandes notched the assist for Casemiro's header to give the hosts the lead on the night, his 38th goal involvement of the season.

His future has been the subject of speculation in recent days, with Saudi Arabia pushing to lure him away from Old Trafford this summer.

However, Ruben Amorim has strongly laid out his desire to keep Fernandes at his disposal, hailing the 30-year-old as one of the world's best players.

"Our idea didn't change. We want to keep the best players - and Bruno is clearly one of the top players in the world. We want Bruno here," Amorim explained earlier this week.

"I think it is easy to understand that [transfer speculation], not just because of the numbers, but the way he plays. He is a top player, and we need top players.

"He is a leader, the captain. It is natural that people want Bruno, but we want to keep him. He is one of the top players in the world."
