Taipei Open: Ayush Shetty and Unnati Hooda will compete in the semifinals

Taiwan’s Taipei On Saturday, the Taipei Open semifinals will feature action from Indian shuttlers Unnati Hooda and Ayush Shetty.

Both of these up-and-coming talents will be looking to advance in their quest for their first Badminton World Federation (BWF) Tour championship.

In the quarterfinals of the men’s singles tournament, Ayush defeated seventh-seeded Brian Yang of Canada 16-21, 21-19, 21-14. According to Olympics.com, the match lasted one hour and eleven minutes.

The 20-year-old shuttler overcame third-seeded Lee Chia-hao of Chinese Taipei in his first round before defeating former world number one Kidambi Srikanth in the round of 16.

Ayush Shetty, ranked 44th in the world, will be making his second appearance in the semi-finals this year. He had previously advanced to the Orleans Masters Super 300 semifinals in March, when he had famously defeated former world champion Loh Kean Yew in the round of 32. During the semifinals,

Ayush will take on Chinese Taipei’s top-seeded Chou Tien-chen, who defeated Indonesia’s Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah in his top-eight matchup.

In the meanwhile, Unnati, who is ranked 53rd in the women’s singles badminton rankings, defeated Hung Yi-Ting, the world No. 65 from China Taipei, in her quarterfinal match. In 52 minutes, the 17-year-old Indian shuttler won 21-8, 19-21, 21-19.

In the semifinals, she will face Japan’s top-seeded Tomoka Miyazaki. Unnati upset Chinese Taipei’s world No. 99 in the round of 16. Sih-Yun Lin 21-12, 21-7.
