Mumbai: Actress Gul Panag recently delivered a pointed message to Pakistan regarding financial self-sufficiency, highlighting that India has not sought any financial aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since 1993.
A user from Pakistan on X, previously known as Twitter, claimed, "In a humiliating defeat for India, the IMF executive board has approved a $1 billion second loan tranche. India unsuccessfully tried to block the approval by the IMF board."
In a courteous yet firm response, Gul, whose father is Lt. Gen. Panag, stated, "Sir, congratulations on securing another loan. With all due respect, we don’t require that money. You do. Just so you know, we have not taken any financial assistance from the IMF since 1993. All repayments of loans from the IMF were completed by May 31, 2000."
She also included a link that confirmed, "India has not taken any financial assistance from the IMF since 1993. All loans from the IMF were repaid by May 31, 2000."
On May 9, India expressed strong opposition to further financial aid for Pakistan during an IMF executive board meeting, citing serious concerns about Islamabad’s history and the potential for bailouts to support cross-border terrorism.
India chose to abstain from voting on a new $1.3 billion IMF loan to Pakistan under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) during this meeting.
Tensions escalated following India's Operation Sindoor, which involved targeted strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation for a terror attack in Pahalgam that resulted in 26 fatalities on April 22.
In response, Pakistan deployed approximately 300 to 400 drones, identified as Turkish-made Asisguard Songar models, on the nights of May 8 and 9. Many of these drones were intercepted using a mix of kinetic and electronic warfare systems, including the Barak-8 and S-400 Triumph missile defense systems, Akash surface-to-air missiles, and homegrown anti-drone technologies.
The targeted locations included Srinagar airport, Awantipora airbase, Nagrota, Jammu, Pathankot, Fazilka, and Jaisalmer.
