The speculation around Virat Kohli’s Test retirement has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world. As per The Indian Express, the former India captain reportedly informed the BCCI of his intent to step away from the red-ball format- a move that, if confirmed, would mark the end of an era.
While no official word has been released yet, the rumour itself has triggered a wave of reactions. Just days after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket, Kohli’s possible exit has left fans and experts equally stunned. Many are now urging the 35-year-old to reconsider and continue contributing to the longest format.
Joining the growing list of voices backing Kohli, Brian Lara posted a heartfelt message on social media, expressing hope that the Indian star will be convinced to carry on.
The West Indies legend not only dismissed the retirement talks but also predicted a dominant phase for Kohli, suggesting he could average over 60 in the remainder of his Test career.
"Test cricket needs Virat!! He is going to be persuaded. He is NOT going to retire from Test cricket. @virat.kohli is going to average above 60 for the remainder of his Test career. #testcricket #thebest," said Lara on Instagram.
Lara’s post follows a similar message from several cricketers, who urged Kohli to continue playing and guide the next generation of Indian cricketers in red-ball cricket.
The BCCI is reportedly planning discussions with Kohli in an attempt to keep him in the mix for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle. India’s 2025–27 WTC campaign is set to begin with a five-Test series in England starting June 20, and selectors are considering a transition phase for the squad.
