With , many travellers are being forced to rethink how they get from A to B. But few have gone as far as TikToker , who recently discovered it was cheaper to take a day trip to Iceland than to buy a train ticket from Manchester to London.
Frustrated by the steep cost of domestic travel, Muscab took to TikTok to share his unusual solution: a £21 flight from Manchester to Keflavik, , followed by a £36 flight to London. The entire journey came to just £57, a whopping £94 less than the £130 train fare he was originally facing.
"I'm currently in Manchester and the trains to get back home to London are over £130," he explained. "So I immediately opened Skyscanner and booked a flight from Manchester to Iceland for £21, and then I booked a flight from Iceland to London for just £36."
While many might baulk at the idea of adding 1,000 miles to their journey just to get home, Muscab saw it as an opportunity.
"Honestly, I think this is gonna be an easy day trip," he said before setting off. "My flight's in two hours, so I'm a bit early... but I land back in London in exactly 24 hours."
He documented his entire experience on , from a surprisingly smooth airport security process "that literally took 30 seconds" to sipping hot chocolate in Reykjavík.
"It's just like boarding a train," he said of the airport experience. "Takes two hours. London to Manchester is like two and a half hours by train. But flying to Iceland? It's just three hours. There's no difference, in my opinion."
Muscab made the most of his unexpected visit, enjoying local sights, exploring the town, and trying Iceland's national dish before heading back to the airport in the evening.
"I got to the city, I got myself a hot chocolate. It's extra special because I'm in a different country, and I didn't expect to be in this country earlier today."
He returned to London less than 24 hours later, tired but satisfied with the experience, especially since it meant avoiding an overpriced train ride.
"The only thing I hate about travelling is the sleeping part. I do not like sleeping outside of my home," he said. "The fact that I can go home and sleep in my bed is the best thing in the world."
The video struck a chord with viewers, many of whom are fed up with the high cost of UK rail travel. Some praised the creativity, others were inspired to try similar international "day trips."
While Muscab's route might not be ideal for commuters in a rush, it's a compelling case for thinking outside the box, especially if you've got time to spare and a taste for adventure.
"I definitely recommend day trips in other countries," he said. "Do it more."
In a world where travelling from Manchester to London can cost more than flying across Europe, that advice is starting to make a lot of sense.
