On the occasion of Mother’s Day, it’s important to highlight one of the Modi government’s flagship schemes aimed at women’s welfare — the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY). Under this scheme, pregnant women receive direct financial assistance to ensure better nutrition and maternal care.
The PMMVY is a central government scheme launched in 2017 to promote safe motherhood and improve health outcomes for both mothers and newborns. Key highlights include:
₹5,000 assistance is provided to pregnant women on the birth of their first child.
₹6,000 is provided on the birth of a girl child during the second pregnancy under PMMVY 2.0.
More than 4.26 crore women have registered under this scheme since its launch.
As per government data:
Over ₹18,000 crore has been transferred directly into the bank accounts of 3.90 crore women across India.
If there’s a pregnant woman in your family, she can register immediately and avail the benefits.
To be eligible for the scheme, the woman must fulfill the following criteria:
Must be at least 19 years old.
The scheme is applicable only for the first live birth.
In case of the second pregnancy, the benefit is available only if a girl child is born (including in twin births if one is a girl).
Annual family income must be less than ₹8 lakh.
The woman should possess any of the following documents:
MNREGA Job Card
Proof of benefits under Kisan Samman Nidhi

The main goal of PMMVY is:
