Born in Aberfeldy, , Alan's early life was marked by his mother's work as a secretary and his father's role as a forester at the Panmure Estate. He has an older brother, Tom, reports .
In his autobiography, Not My Father's Son, Alan candidly shared the traumatic experiences of his childhood, revealing the emotional and physical abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. He disclosed that he severed ties with his father in his early 20s.
Prior to filming an episode of Who Do You Think You Are?, Alan discovered that his father had doubts about his paternity, leading both Alan and his brother Tom to undergo DNA testing to confirm their biological connection.
