Bhubaneswar/Baripada: In a deeply moving and courageous gesture, the parents of a six-year-old boy from Baripada, who was declared brain dead following a tragic accident, chose to donate his kidneys, providing two other children with a second chance at life.
The child, named Swasriayan Patra, sustained a severe brain injury when a heavy iron gate fell on him. Initially treated in Balasore, he was later transferred to SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) in Bhubaneswar on May 7. Despite receiving extensive medical care, his condition worsened.
After conducting two Apnea tests, medical professionals confirmed his brain death. In the midst of their profound sorrow, the boy's parents decided to turn their tragedy into hope for others. With guidance from SUMUM's medical team, they made the courageous choice to donate their son's organs, ultimately saving two young lives.
The hospital worked closely with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) to facilitate the quick retrieval and transport of the kidneys. One kidney was sent to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, while the other was dispatched to a private hospital in the capital.
This donation represents the fourth organ retrieval coordinated by SUMUM. To date, the hospital has facilitated the donation of 13 organs from brain-dead patients, contributing to life-saving efforts both within Odisha and nationwide.
Dr. Swetapadma Dash, CEO of SUMUM, expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the family's altruistic decision. "Their resilience and choice in such a heartbreaking time is genuinely heroic. We are dedicated to promoting organ donation and assisting families in making life-saving decisions," she stated.
