Popular singer Selena Gomez is under fire online following reports suggesting that her mental health startup, Wondermind, is experiencing significant financial difficulties. Allegations indicate that the company has been late in paying its employees and has reduced their health benefits.
According to a recent Forbes article, Mandy Teefey, Selena's mother and the CEO of Wondermind, allegedly informed staff that she had to secure a loan against her home to settle the startup's debts. However, a source later contradicted this claim, stating it was inaccurate.
While one delayed paycheck has been resolved, another remains outstanding, as reported by Forbes.
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Wondermind acknowledged the company's current 'growing pains.' They stated, 'Like many startups, Wondermind is navigating its own challenges. We are preparing to enter a new phase and will continue our vital work in mental fitness.'
The situation has ignited a wave of criticism directed at Selena Gomez, particularly on social media platforms. As one of the wealthiest entertainers globally, with a net worth estimated between $700 million and $1.3 billion, many fans are questioning why her company is unable to compensate its employees.
One Reddit user remarked, 'Billionaires billionaring again,' while another expressed frustration, stating, 'It’s absurd that Selena started this company and can’t even be bothered to meet or pay her employees.'
Critics have also raised concerns regarding Selena's level of engagement with the business. A comment on Reddit suggested, 'If she’s truly invested in the charity, she should fund it herself. If not, she should notify the employees and close it down. Not paying them is unacceptable.'
As of now, Selena Gomez has not publicly addressed the ongoing allegations.
