Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Test Retirement: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two of cricket’s modern-day greats, have retired from the Test arena, making the last few days agonizing for Indian fans, to put it mildly. Yograj Singh, a former cricket player who is infamous for his passionate outbursts, has also expressed his thoughts on their retirement.
The father of former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh considered the possible gap left by the two legends in an interview with ANI.
“Virat is a big player, so it will obviously be a loss,” Yograj said, highlighting Kohli’s prominence and impact in the game’s longest format.
“When many players were either removed, retired, or coerced into retirement in 2011, the team fell apart and has still not stood back up,” he said, drawing comparisons to India’s 2011 transition period.
Even though Yograj agreed that “everyone’s time comes,” he thinks that both Rohit and Kohli have cricket left in them.
“I feel a lot of cricket is still left in Virat and Rohit,” he said.
“I told Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) that it was not the right move when he was retiring,” Yograj said in reference to his son’s decision to leave international cricket. When one is no longer able to walk, one should leave the field.
Yograj was unapologetically critical of the present tendency to rely too much on young people, cautioning that the team may become unstable due to a lack of seasoned leaders.
“If you form a team full of youngsters, it will always fall apart,” he said.
He went on to say, “Maybe Virat feels that he has nothing more left to achieve,” raising the possibility that Kohli’s choice was impacted by his own sense of fulfillment.
Yograj was especially outspoken when he turned his attention to Rohit Sharma, implying that the Indian captain might have prolonged his red-ball career with the correct backing.
“I think Rohit Sharma needed just one person to motivate him daily, for example, to go for a run at 5 AM,” he said.
“Rohit (Sharma) and Virender Sehwag are two people who retired too early,” he said.
“The best athletes need to continue playing until they are fifty years old. Yograj expressed his dissatisfaction by saying, “I am sad about their retirement because no one is left to motivate the youngsters now.”
