Following U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated assertions about mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, the Congress party expressed its concerns on Wednesday. They questioned the typically outspoken Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar regarding their responses to these claims. During a speech in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, Trump reiterated that his administration successfully brokered a historic ceasefire to curb escalating violence between the two nations.
Congress General Secretary and Communication In-Charge Jairam Ramesh remarked that just days ago, they learned about the ceasefire from the U.S. President. He highlighted that during a public event in Saudi Arabia, Trump disclosed that he pressured India into this ceasefire through sanctions and trade deals, effectively blackmailing the country. Ramesh questioned, "What do the usually talkative Prime Minister and Foreign Minister have to say about this revelation? Have they compromised India's security interests under U.S. pressure?"
Ramesh further criticized, asking, "Did the U.S. President really stop the war?" The Congress party stated on Tuesday night that Trump was not only linking the two countries but also comparing Prime Minister Modi to his Pakistani counterpart, Shahbaz Sharif. Pawan Khera, head of the Congress media and publicity department, shared a clip of Trump's recent comments during the Saudi event. He captioned it, "The U.S. President again stated: 'I used trade to negotiate between them, and they agreed.' Donald Trump is not just connecting India with Pakistan but is also equating Prime Minister Modi with Shahbaz Sharif." Khera questioned whether such comparisons are acceptable to the Prime Minister's Office.
