Sir Chris Hoy issues update on cancer diagnosis as Olympic icon in 'stability stage'

Sir Chris Hoy is “appreciating life more than ever” after coming to terms with his devastating cancer diagnosis. The legend

He was diagnosed with primary prostate cancer which had spread to his bones. Doctors gave between two to four years to live.

While the news would have been devastating, the 49-year-old is determined not to let it get him down having taken his diagnosis on board. Speaking to , Hoy has revealed his cancer and treatment is now just an everyday part of his life that has been taken in his stride.

He said: "I'm doing well. It feels like I've entered a bit of a stability stage at the moment and I'm feeling good. Most importantly, cancer's not the first thing I think about when I go to bed at night. I think we've got into a rhythm now where it's part of our life and we manage that and crack on.

"I feel good. I'm on constant medication, constant treatment, but it's not interfering too much with my life, and the most important thing is it's working, so I'm stable at the moment, everything's good. Making hay while the sun shines."

With only limited time left, Hoy is determined to make the most of every single second. He added: "I can't believe the position I'm in now compared to 18 months ago. I never imagined I'd be able to get to this point where I'm actually living life.

"And not just living life, but actually appreciating it more than ever. It's not just about doing bucket-list stuff and doing massive things, it's about appreciating the daily, mundane fun of life."

Hoy is one of the most decorated athletes in British history. The former Scottish cyclist won six Olympic gold medals - his first coming in 2000 - while he also has a silver in his collection.

He also secured 11 World Championship gold medals and 34 World Cup titles before making the decision to retire in 2013. The cycling icon was also named the Sports Personality of the Year in 2008, also receiving an MBE in the same year. Hoy was later knighted in the 2009 New Years Honours list.

Since his retirement, he has moved into punditry having appeared regularly on the BBC for the last three Olympic games, while Hoy has also been on air for the . Hoy also has a huge interest in motorsport having raced in the Complete British GT Championships, as well as the Complete European Le Mans Series.
