struggled to hide his anger after being targeted by a pitch invader following Coventry City's play-off semi-final second leg away to Sunderland. The Sky Blues' promotion hopes were crushed by their Championship rivals, who netted in the last minute of extra time to .

It sparked scenes of jubilation at the Stadium of Light, with some Sunderland supporters spotted entering the pitch. One went as far as going up to Coventry boss Lampard and asking for a selfie - something the ex-Chelsea midfielder didn't take kindly too.

As picked up by the Sky Sports cameras following the full-time whistle, Lampard appears agitated as the fan confronts him and is in no mood to humour the pitch invader's selfie request. Instead, having shrugged off the supporter, he turns his back and wanders off in the opposite direction.

It came after a gruelling two-legged tie, which saw Coventry come from behind twice across the 180 minutes of action. Ephron Mason-Clark's leveller took the game into extra time, only for Sunderland's Daniel Ballard to pop up with the winning goal from a corner in the final seconds of the tie.

It's a premature end to a fantastic season as far as Lampard and Coventry are concerned, with the former England international having taken the Midlands side from a relegation scrap to the brink of promotion. Reacting to the defeat, Lampard told Sky Sports: "Firstly congratulations to Sunderland, they go to the final but immense pride I've got in my players.

"If anyone watched the two games, we dominated at home, we made a mistake and they scored. I think we dominated huge periods of this game. We played, controlled and in the second half it was wave after wave. The players have given everything from where we've come from - 17th in the league in December and the players have been brilliant in the second half of the season."

He continued: "They had to concede to us because of the way we played and with the way the lads controlled the game they don't deserve it. I'm a lot older and I've been around a lot so I've taken whacks and I've had success so maybe I can be a bit more balanced in my job but for those players, they don't deserve that."

It's the second time in three seasons Coventry have experienced play-off heartbreak, having lost on penalties in the final to Luton Town in 2023. It will be 25 years since Coventry last competed in English football's top tier by the time next season rolls around.
