Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday announced a new semiconductor unit under the government's India Semiconductor Mission at an investment of Rs 3,700 crore.

The plant, to come up in Uttar Pradesh and the sixth under the government's flagship chip mission, will manufacture display chips for smartphones, automobiles and personal computers. It will be designed for 20,000 wafers per month, and 36 million chips per month, the minister said in a briefing.
