Aamar Boss: A New Chapter in Bengali Cinema

The talented directors Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy have successfully revitalized Bengali cinema with their latest film, Aamar Boss, a touching family drama that follows the success of their previous hit, Bohurupi, released in 2024.

This new film diverges significantly from their earlier work, presenting a narrative filled with familial warmth and a touch of glamour that is often absent in Bangla films. The film shines particularly due to Raakhee Gulzar's portrayal of Shubra Goswami, a formidable matriarch whose presence enhances every scene. Her absence is felt deeply when she is not on screen, although the supporting cast, including Sauraseni Maitra as Sarbani, adds depth to the story.

Maitra's character works at a publishing house run by Animesh Goswami, played by Mukherjee himself, who strives to balance his duties as a son, husband, and employer while navigating the complexities of his mother's strong personality.

The film explores the tension between the mother's idealistic views and the harsh realities of life, with Gulzar's expressive performance conveying a range of emotions with just a glance.

However, the narrative sometimes simplifies intricate family dynamics, particularly regarding the challenges of elder care, which are portrayed through whimsical characters rather than realistic portrayals. Additionally, an awkward comedic moment involving a drunken poet feels out of place and detracts from the overall narrative.

Despite these flaws, Aamar Boss maintains a lively spirit throughout, even during tense moments between the mother and son, suggesting that despair will not prevail.

The film celebrates family bonds with vibrant music and dance, although Animesh's relationship with his wife Moushumi, played by Srabanti Chatterjee, feels less developed and more troubled. The film also highlights the struggles of ambitious women in cinema, contrasting with the uplifting moments provided by Maitra's character singing Tagore's poignant songs.
