BSF Soldier's Return

On April 23, 2025, Purnam Kumar Shaw, a Border Security Force (BSF) soldier who had been held by the Pakistan Rangers, was brought back to India. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that her administration maintained communication with Shaw's wife, Rajni Shaw, and had spoken with her multiple times. She emphasized that continuous efforts were made to secure his release, with the state's Director General of Police in regular contact with their BSF counterparts. Just two days ago, Banerjee reassured Rajni that her husband was in good health and recovering well. Although the operation for his release took some time, he was finally freed this morning, bringing joy to his family and the nation.

Following the announcement of Shaw's release, residents of Rishra in Hooghly district celebrated. Pakistani authorities confirmed around 10:30 AM that they had handed over the BSF constable to Indian officials at the Attari-Wagah border. Celebrations erupted in Shaw's neighborhood, with family members shedding tears of joy amidst prayers and the distribution of sweets.

Background of the Incident

Shaw had inadvertently crossed into Pakistani territory while on duty in the Ferozepur sector on April 23, just a day after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. He was subsequently captured by the Pakistan Rangers. As military tensions escalated between India and Pakistan, concerns grew among his family and neighbors. Rajni, who is pregnant, even traveled to Pathankot and Ferozepur to personally appeal for her husband's release. She expressed gratitude to the citizens and leaders who supported her during this challenging time, noting that local councilors, MPs, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee consistently reassured her.
