Synopsis

P Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader, expresses concern about the INDIA bloc. He thinks the alliance appears weak. Chidambaram acknowledges the BJP's strong organization. He describes the BJP as a powerful machine. He notes their influence across various institutions. He suggests the INDIA bloc needs strengthening. He believes there is still time to improve it.

Senior Congress leader and former Union finance minister P Chidambaram has said that the INDIA bloc has become frail and that he was not sure if the alliance was still intact.

While stating what has been the worst-kept secret about the INDIA bloc in political circles of late, Chidambaram further said that he has not seen any political party "so formidably organised as the BJP".

Speaking at the launch of a book in Delhi on Thursday late evening, Chidambaram said, "The future is not so bright as Mrityunjay Singh Yadav (book author) says. He seems to feel that the INDIA bloc is still intact. I am not sure. Maybe Salman Khurshid (the other author), can answer that because he was part of the negotiating team on part of the Congress for the INDIA bloc. If the INDIA bloc is totally intact, I would be very, very happy, but it seems frail. It can be put together. There is still time. There are still events which will unfold.

Talking about the task of taking on the ruling BJP, the senior Congress leader said, "In my experience and my reading of history, there has been no political party so formidably organised as the BJP. It's not just another political party. It's a machine behind a machine and the two machines control all the machinery in India. From the Election Commission of India to the lowest police station in the country, they (BJP) are able to control and sometimes capture these institutions. It is a formidable machinery, as much as can be allowed in a democracy."
