Popular Turkish Shows Removed From YouTube, OTT Platforms Amid India-Pakistan Conflict

In a turn of events reminiscent of the earlier boycott of Pakistani content, Turkish dramas are now under the scanner in India amid rising diplomatic tensions between the two countries. The entertainment fallout comes in the wake of Turkey's perceived anti-India stance, sparking a public outcry for Indian platforms to take down Turkish content.According to a report in Midday, Zee5 has already taken the lead, silently removing several Turkish shows from its catalogue over the past week. Among the titles dropped was Relationship Status: It’s Complicated, part of the popular Zindagi content bouquet that had found a loyal audience in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities."We’ve been monitoring the sentiment for weeks. While there is no government directive, we made a business decision to avoid a potential backlash. These titles, a part of the Zindagi bouquet, were doing well in Tier-1 and -2 cities, but the risk of reputational damage outweighed the benefits," an insider informed the news portal. In the last seven to eight years, Turkish dramas have grown immensely popular among Indian viewers. Shows like Ertuğrul, Feriha, and Masum carved out a niche fan base, especially among younger audiences and families. However, with growing political tensions, the sentiment is shifting fast. While there is no official ban or advisory from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, other OTT platforms are reportedly reviewing their Turkish catalogues. Though the Indian government has not made any official statements regarding Turkish dramas, the ripple effects are being felt across sectors. Several Indian universities have suspended academic collaborations with Turkish institutions. In the film industry, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) recently appealed to producers to avoid shooting in Turkey.Amazon MX Player, which hosts fan favourites like Golden Boy, Love is in the Air, and Endless Love, has internally paused any new content acquisition from Turkish production houses."We haven’t received any formal instructions or advisory from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. As of now, no content has been removed, but we have paused new acquisitions from Turkish production houses," an insider from the streamer reportedly revealed.Meanwhile, YouTube channels curating and streaming Turkish series are also feeling the pressure. Live Pakistan, a popular channel that aired Resurrection: Ertuğrul, became inaccessible in India since Friday noon (May 16). The cause appears to be a series of takedown requests.
