A fan has shared an she uses to make sure her dark and black retain their colours and don't fade after washing. Carolina McCauley explained to her audience that there are a few items she adds to the to make sure her clothes stay the same colour, and are also soft when the wash is done.

Carolina shared six steps she follows to make none of her dark clothes fade, or accidentally bleach. Instead of using chemical fabric softener, Carolina uses white vinegar to help soften all of her clothes.

However, to make sure all of the dark clothes lock in their clothes, Carolina adds salt.

Here are the steps you should take to make sure none of the colours run or fade.

Firstly, turn your clothes inside out, especially jeans, as this helps reduce fading.

Next add half a cup of salt to the wash to help lock in colour.

Use vinegar instead of fabric softener to keep the clothes feeling soft. Carolina also recommended washing dark clothes separately from colours and whites.

She instructed to always use cold water as it's gentler on fabric and colour.

Once washed, dry the clothes in the shade if possible as the sun can bleach your clothes.

Salt helps prevent clothes from fading by acting as a 'colour-setting' agent, which helps to lock in the dye's molecules within the fabric's fibres. This will help minimise any colour bleeding and prevent black dye washing out during a cycle.

also recommended some alternative methods for keeping black clothes dark, including washing items inside out on a cold water wash or a delicate cycle in the washing machine.

The clothes can then be dried on a low heat or air dried to retain their colour.
