Veteran actress Moushumi Chatterjee is one of those who never shies away from speaking her mind. Her straightforward nature and short temper are well known to every actor of her time. In a recent interview Moushumi opened up about an incident when her blunt speaking got her removed from a film which also featured Amitabh Bachchan. With honesty and grace she accepted the reason why the incident happened and how she often chose dignity over drama. In the 1970s Chatterjee and Bachchan made a famous on-screen pair. They worked in movies like Roti Kapda Aur Makaan Benaam and Mazil. However in 1981 things took a turn during the making of Barsaat Ki Ek Raat. Chatterjee recalled and said “It was filmmaker Shakti Samanta’s film Barsaat Ki Ek Raat. One day Shakti uncle called me and asked ‘Did you have any fight with Amitabh Bachchan?’ I told him ‘Uncle I am not so close to anyone that they would fight with me. I am very cordial and nice and I get that feedback also.’ He said ‘That is the problem. Most of the heroes say ‘Moushumi ko kyu liya uske sath humara tuning sahi nahi hai.’ He then asked me ‘Do you understand what they mean by tuning?’ I said ‘Maybe now I understand. Maybe more than friendship. But I am not here to make friends. I am here to work.’” Even though she had already been signed for the film Moushumi was chucked out and replaced by Rakhee Gulzar. She said “So Shakti uncle removed me from this film. I told him ‘I will return you the signing amount’ he said ‘No keep it with you I will make my next film with you.’ So I did Anand Ashram. I understood that he couldn’t spoil his relationship with the number one star.” After Barsaat Ki Ek Raat Moushumi and Amitabh worked together in the film Piku.
