According to Dr. Huynh Tan Vu of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, durian contains high levels of vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, and phytonutrients. Its health benefits include boosting immunity, improving digestion, reducing inflammation, and lowering blood pressure. It may also help prevent cancer, support thyroid function, ease joint pain, and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.
However, pairing durian with these foods may result in negative effects:
1. Alcohol
Combining durian with alcohol can cause excessive internal heat. In people with high blood pressure or diabetes, this may lead to headaches, heart palpitations, and in severe cases, bleeding or stroke.
2. Certain meats and seafood
Durian is rich in sugar, potassium, fat, and has a high glycemic index. When consumed with fatty meats like beef, lamb, dog, or seafood—which are already high in saturated fats and protein—it may cause a sudden spike in blood cholesterol levels.
3. Spicy foods
Due to its naturally warming properties, durian should not be eaten with spicy ingredients such as chili, ginger, garlic, or pepper. This combination can trigger restlessness and discomfort.
4. Coffee
Durian contains sulfur compounds that, when combined with the caffeine in coffee, inhibit the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase. This prevents the body from neutralizing up to 70% of oxidants in cells, potentially leading to toxic buildup and adverse health effects.
