New Delhi: The yearly ‘Operation Olivia’ mission of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) protected a record number of Olive Ridley turtles (more than 6.98 lakh) nesting at the mouth of the Rushikulya river in Odisha in February 2025, which was a significant boost to marine conservation.

Operation Olivia, a significant ICG program, is carried out every year from November to May with the goal of providing secure nesting sites for Olive Ridley turtles, especially at Gahirmatha Beach and the other coastal regions of Odisha, where over eight lakh turtles arrive yearly.

According to a Defense Ministry statement, the record mass nesting at the mouth of the Rushikulya river in Odisha is evidence of the ICG’s persistent efforts to protect the endangered species via strict patrols, aerial monitoring, and community involvement.

According to the report, ICG has conducted 1,768 airborne surveillance flights and 5,387 surface patrol sorties since the start of Operation Olivia, greatly lowering hazards such as habitat disturbance and illicit fishing.

The ICG’s robust enforcement role in preserving marine life was reaffirmed at this time when 366 vessels engaged in illicit fishing were apprehended. In addition to monitoring, ICG has actively supported sustainable fishing methods and conservation education by encouraging the use of Turtle Excluder Devices and collaborating with NGOs via official Memorandums of Understanding.

According to ICG, this milestone highlights the value of consistent conservation efforts and reinforces the need for ongoing observation and flexible approaches to promote long-term marine sustainability.

With approximately 800,000 turtles coming each year, the eastern coast of India—in particular, Gahirmatha Beach in Odisha—is an essential breeding location for Olive Ridley Turtles. These species depend on ICG’s rigorous enforcement and rescue efforts to safeguard their survival as they face threats from illicit fishing, net entanglement, and habitat deterioration.
