At its historical museum, housed in the historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Central Railway celebrated International Museum Day 2025.
This year’s topic, “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities,” is on how museums inspire the next generation, preserve history, and spark discussions, according to an official statement.
In keeping with the theme, the CSMT Heritage Museum is showcasing the history, invention, and development of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR), which served as the forerunner of the Central Railway as it exists today, the statement reads.
According to officials, the Central Railway is inviting the public to participate in entertaining quizzes on its well-known social media platforms in honor of International Museum Day 2025. The winners will receive a complimentary guided tour of the museum, which is a unique chance to discover the majesty of the CSMT building and the history of Indian Railways.
The statement said that a variety of rare and historic objects are on display at the museum. The Shinkansen E5 Bullet Train, the contemporary Vande Bharat Express, the vintage GIP1 engine, and a functional 1:4 scale model of a Barsi Light Railway steam engine are all included.
Additionally, the visitors may see Mangalore tiles from early railway stations, medical equipment, vintage lighting, and station bells. To improve the tourist experience, QR codes adjacent to the displays provide more digital information, according to authorities.
They said that Central Railway often plans special trips for youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with special needs, according to the day’s theme of teaching and empowering future generations. Children receiving cancer treatment from Tata Memorial Hospital recently visited the museum, as did 45 rural girls from communities between Asangaon and Kasara.
According to authorities, the purpose of the trips is to inspire young people and generate interest in India’s railway heritage.
The museum, which is housed in one of the most revered train stations worldwide, offers more than simply trains and technology. According to the official announcement, it also narrates the tale of the individuals and vision behind Indian Railways, the trailblazers who brought train travel to India with creativity and tenacity.
