Understanding the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO)

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) serves as a crucial investment option for employees. Contributions to a Provident Fund (PF) account are made by both the employer and the employee. Typically, employees contribute 12% of their basic salary, matched by an equal contribution from the employer. These contributions are made monthly.


Moreover, account holders benefit from interest on their deposits, which is provided by the government through the EPFO scheme. Currently, the interest rate for EPFO accounts stands at 8.25%, credited annually. To check if the interest has been added to their account, individuals can follow the steps outlined below.


EPFO: Steps to Check Interest Credited

Using the UMANG App



  • Log in with your user ID and password on the UMANG app.

  • Choose the ‘View Passbook’ option from the menu.

  • Your PF account balance will be displayed, showing the deposited amount along with the date.


Via the EPFO Portal



  • Navigate to the Employees section on the official EPFO portal.

  • Log in using your UAN number and password.

  • Select the “Member Passbook” option once logged in.

  • You will need to re-enter your UAN number and password to access your passbook.

  • Your passbook will then appear on the screen.


Through SMS



  • Send an SMS with the text “UAN EPFOHO ENG” to 7738299899.

  • You will receive a message containing your current PF account balance.


Using a Missed Call



  • To check your balance, give a missed call to 9966044425 from the mobile number linked to your UAN.

  • A return message will provide your account balance details.
