Dhaka: Renowned Bangladeshi actress Nusrat Faria, known for portraying Sheikh Hasina in the biopic Mujib: The Making of a Nation, has been arrested at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
According to international media reports, Faria was apprehended by immigration authorities just before boarding a flight to Thailand. Her arrest was made based on an active warrant against her.
Police officials claim that Nusrat Faria is accused of being involved in an alleged assassination attempt on former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during anti-government protests in July 2024.
The 31-year-old actress gained widespread recognition for playing the role of Sheikh Hasina in the Bangladesh-India co-produced biographical film about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. The film was directed by acclaimed Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal.
Authorities state that Faria’s arrest is part of ongoing investigations into the violent protests that led to Sheikh Hasina stepping down from her post as Prime Minister. Following her resignation, Hasina reportedly relocated to India.
The arrest has stirred significant media attention given Faria’s prominent role in a film celebrating Bangladesh’s political legacy.
Earlier, The interim government of Bangladesh has imposed a ban on the Awami League, the political party led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to international media reports.
The ban was enforced under the country’s anti-terrorism law. A government advisor stated that the party’s activities will remain suspended until court proceedings are completed.
In addition, the interim government has approved amendments to the International Crimes Tribunal Act, allowing legal action to be taken against political parties and associated institutions.
