A father from Indiana in the has moved to after fleeing the US on the day of 's second presidential inauguration. The dad feared for his 14-year-old daughter's future in what he describes to be a divisive and hostile environment.
Daniel Geduld, 47, left Indiana in January with his teenage daughter Vi, who he says is gay and autistic, citing growing concerns about intolerance, particularly in conservative regions like his home state, TeessideLive reported. He previously worked as an animator and voice actor in Los Angeles, with credits including projects for Hanna-Barbera and his own YouTube-based studio, Flying Squid.
Daniel Geduld told : "When Trump got elected we thought it was too risky for her to stay there and the more I see in the news the more risky it seems. We were in Indiana, which is a very red area, very conservative, there was no question Trump would be elected there and the Governor is just as bad if not worse.
"It is very worrying. There is a lot of fear, especially economic fear, but a lot of fear about schools for people like Vi because they are under the Department of Education.
"My daughter and I have trans friends and we have no idea what is going to happen with them. We do not know how they are going to get out. It is terrifying."
Geduld has dual citizenship thanks to his English father, and drew comparisons between the current political landscape in the US and events in pre-WWII Europe, referencing his grandmother's journey to rescue his Jewish great-grandmother from Nazi Germany in 1936.
He added: "Since we have been here it has been a lot better for Vi. Back home she was bullied a lot but she has met kids here and they have been open and accepting.
"She has really come out of her shell and has been going out whereas she used to stay in her room. This has been a really great change for her. I really like it here and we are in walking distance of the town centre. My only complaint is that the Transporter Bridge is closed right now."
Daniel is currently looking for work and must earn at least £30,000 to bring over his wife Heather, and their two dogs.
After initially settling in Blackburn, Daniel moved to Aire Street in Middlesbrough a few weeks ago.
Around the area, houses go for as little as £39K, according to Nethouseprices.
To help with the move, Daniel launched a GoFundMe page, which successfully raised £2,000 to cover essential expenses and where he shared a video of his new three-bedroom terraced house that he described as a "dinky little house" with a "dinky backyard" compared to American homes.
However, he said that the town felt far more cosmopolitan and vibrant than the rural farmland they left behind in Indiana.
