As the UK continues to experience , with temperatures rising, many Brits are spending more time outdoors, enjoying the sunshine, and perhaps some outdoor cooking. However, there is one downfall that comes with the lovely weather - . The pesky insects are the last thing you want ruining your or simple relaxing time outdoors.
As wasp season started in April, the continous warm weather has provided the ideal conditions for the insects to thrive, which comes will a series of issues, from painful stings to life-threatening anaphylaxis for those with . Additionally, there is also a risk of infestation. If wasps decide to build a nest in your home or garden, the insects easily and quickly multiply and a removal by pest control professionals could set you back as much as £200, which is why Brits have been told to place garlic in their gardens.
To prevent the issue from becoming so severe, a garden expert has revealed natural and cheap solutions. For many it may even cost nothing as most people probably already have the ingredient in their kitchens.
"Garlic is a suprisingly effective wasp repellent," explains Josh Novell, a garden expert at . "Its strong smell overwhelms a wasp's sense and naturally drives them away. It's safe, cheap, and easy to use."
There are many ways to use garlic to help prevent wasps from invading your properties, including placing minced garlic in a small bowl near outdoor seating or food. Garlic can be bought for as little as 22p in , emphasising how inexpensive the trick is.
Other ways to use garlic as a wasp repellent, according to Josh, is to fill a spray bottle with water and 1-2 teaspoons of garlic powder. Shake the bottle well and spray the solution around patios, doors, and bins. Gardeners can also consider growing garlic in garden beds or containers.
Josh warned that while many people might opt to use a jar or jam or sugary water to lure wasps, that method can in fact make things worse.
"Sweet traps can attract wasps from neighbouring areas, increasing activity rather than reducing it," he explains. "You're unintentionally drawing them in."
Instead, a bit of garlic and ensuring that you clean up any spills and cover food and drink when eating outside is a great solution to keeping wasps away.
