The Supreme Court of Pakistan has dismissed the appeal of Zahir Jaffer. His death sentence in the Noor Mukadam murder case has been upheld. The verdict has been welcomed by the public. Several celebrities also expressed their satisfaction.
Noor Mukadam was murdered in July 2021. She was the daughter of a former Pakistani ambassador. Zahir Jaffer, the son of a wealthy businessman, was accused of her brutal killing.
According to police records, Noor and Zahir had an argument on July 20. Noor refused to marry Zahir. This led to a violent confrontation. Zahir locked her in a room. When she tried to escape, he ordered his staff to stop her. He then dragged her back, murdered her, and beheaded her. The incident happened in Islamabad.
The case sparked national outrage. It highlighted the lack of safety for women. The trial lasted four months. In February 2022, the District and Sessions Court in Islamabad sentenced Zahir to death. He later filed an appeal in the Supreme Court.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court delivered its final judgment. The appeal was rejected. The death sentence was upheld.
The verdict was seen as a major step toward justice. Many well-known Pakistani actresses reacted to the decision on social media.
