One of the most successful teams in the IPL, the Chennai Super Kings, seems certain to finish last in the IPL 2025 points standings for the first time in their illustrious history after their most recent loss to the Rajasthan Royals. The team had an exciting season, winning their first game against their bitter rivals, the Mumbai Indians, but their performance plummeted and they were eliminated early from the playoffs. They consistently lost important players to injury, which made their on-field performances subpar. Ruturaj Gaikwad, their normal captain, sustained an elbow injury that interrupted his season and forced the team to rely on its talisman, MS Dhoni, which was a big blow.
Even the great captain’s return to leadership, however, didn’t much improve their situation. And now, CSK is only one game away from having the poorest IPL season ever. The Dhoni-led squad is now ranked 10th in the 10-team league.
Only three of CSK’s 13 games have been victories so far. They have six points so far this season, which is the fewest of the ten clubs, thanks to their three infrequent wins. After finishing the season with eight points from 14 games, the Rajasthan Royals are now in ninth place. Although CSK may equal RR’s point total, it is doubtful, if not impossible, given their subpar net run rate (-1.030).
On paper, CSK can escape a record-breaking low by finishing ninth. However, they need to defeat RR’s NRR of -0.549 by a significant margin in their next game. Given that they will be playing the Gujarat Titans, who are presently atop the table with nine victories from twelve games, it will be easier said than done.
The franchise is now attempting to rebuild. Dhoni has already declared that the procedure has begun.
Getting answers was a top priority after we were eliminated from the competition. It all comes down to selecting the ideal combo and identifying the XI player you may bid for in the auction. We had trouble hitting at the beginning of the season. We’ve become better at it. For the guys moving ahead, it’s about securing your place,” Dhoni said.
