As cricket fans await the announcement of the next Test captain, who will succeed Rohit Sharma, who withdrew from the format earlier, all eyes are on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
The new Test captain and the team for the next England trip are anticipated to be revealed on May 24, according to a report by India Today. A press conference and announcement might be planned after Saturday’s selection meeting, according to the suggestion. Their sources indicate that the announcement could be made at about 12 p.m. (IST).
The wait to see who would be the next guy to captain the Indian side in whites is still ongoing, as experienced players like Virat Kohli and Rohit have announced their retirement from the longest format. Both senior stars made the decision to leave the format after failing to make it to the World Test Championship final in the 2023–25 cycle.
According to several sources, Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rishabh Pant are the front-runners to be the next captain. However, it is also implied that Bumrah had withdrawn from the battle for leadership.
Given the injuries he sustained after playing all five games on their most recent Australia trip earlier this year, Bumrah could not be expected to play all five Test matches.
According to a Sky Sports report, one selector did not support Gill’s appointment since he hasn’t yet shown himself in the longest format.
It is still unclear who the BCCI would consider for the position in light of all the claims that are coming to light. After the hole left by both Rohit and Kohli, there is no doubt that whoever is selected will have enormous shoes to fill.
They haven’t won a Test trip in England since 2007, so the England visit will be difficult in and of itself. The Indian squad will aim to accumulate as many points as possible to regain their position in the race, since the England series marks the start of the new World Test Championship cycle.
