Jaipur: BJP MLA from Anta (Baran) of Rajasthan, Kanwarlal Meena surrendered in the trial court on Wednesday. He was sentenced to 3 years in a 20-year-old case.
The Supreme Court had rejected Kanwarlal's special leave petition (SLP) on May 7th, and he was ordered to surrender before the trial court within two weeks.
He is now on the verge of loosing his Assembly membership. The Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani has sought legal opinion from advocate general regarding scraping Meena's membership.
Meena was sentenced to three years in a case of taking a Sub Divisional Magistrate on gunpoint for recounting in a deputy sarpanch election in 2005.
ACJM Court Manohar Thana had acquitted him in the case in April 2018 but the Appellate Court Aklera overturned the decision of the trial court and held him guilty. Meena approached Rajasthan High and the Supreme but failed to get relief.
Under the Representation of the People Act 1951, there is a provision to disqualify an MP or anMLA if he is sentenced to more than 2 years. The Speaker of the legislative assembly Vasudev Devnani has sought legal opinion as opposition Congress is demanding action in the matter.
