Mammootty started his acting career in 1971 with a small role in Anubhavangal Paalichakkal. In 1980, he cracked his lead role for the first time in the film Mela. This is the time when Mammootty started gaining headlines. Soon he became one of the brightest stars of Malayalam cinema.
In 1982, Mammootty acted in 24 films. The following year, which was 1983, he worked in a massive 36 films. In 1984 and 1985, Mammootty did 34 and 28 films respectively. Till date, he has been a part of over 350 films. Mammootty’s 1983 film Aa Ratri was one of the first films in Malayalam cinema to cross the Rs 1 crore mark.
Mammootty’s son Dulquer Salmaan is also a famous actor. As per media reports, he took 13 years to do 36 films. Coming back to the superstar, Mammootty is also a National Award-winning star. He bagged his first National Award for the film Mathilukal. His powerful performance in Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar in the year 2000 won him another National Award.
