was brought to an abrupt halt as presenter Kamali Melbourne offered an upsetting breaking update. The presenter informed viewers that two migrants have died today (May 21) attempting to cross the English Channel in a small boat to reach the UK.

Melbourne said: "Some breaking news to bring you coming in to us from the French authorities, they are reporting that two people have died in the Channel trying to cross into the UK, after the boat carrying them got into difficulty. This of course comes today, Wednesday, after on the 19th of May one person had died after a small boat sank while attempting to cross into the UK, according to French authorities as well.

"Some 12,500 have crossed the English Channel this year in small boats. That's 12,500 so far in 2025. French officials saying that two people have died today attempting to cross after the boat they were in ran into some difficulties in the English Channel. We'll get you more detail on that throughout the day," he reiterated.

The boat was carrying around 80 migrants and attempted to make the crossing late on Tuesday night into the early hours of Wednesday, but got into difficulty near Calais.

The latest figures are a massive blow to prime minister Keir Starmer, who last week laid out stringent measures for immigrants intending to move to the UK - including new language learning rules.

It comes after another migrant died on Monday (May 19), with 62 people rescued from the Channel when an "overloaded" boat sank. A French Navy helicopter helping with the search spotted an unconscious person in the water who was sadly later declared dead.

A mother and her baby were taken to hospital in France with hypothermia, along with the others rescued who went to Boulogne-sur-Mer.
