New Delhi: While the winter season brings coolness and rest, it also creates some special challenges for our body. One of these challenges is vitamin-D deficiency. Especially during the cold days, spending time in the sun decreases, which can reduce the level of vitamin-D in the body. According to experts, vitamin-D deficiency makes bones weak and causes many serious health problems.

Vitamin D and Bones Relations

Vitamin-D is also called Sunshine Vitamin because it is made in the body by exposure to sunlight. It helps in absorption of vitamin calcium, which is extremely important for the strengthening of bones. If there is a deficiency of vitamin-D in the body, then calcium is also not fully absorbed, which weakens the bones. Vitamin-D deficiency causes problems like osteoporosis, bone pain and rickets. This problem increases due to lack of sunlight in the cold. Especially the elderly and women need to be more careful.

Why does winter decrease?

1. To spend less time in the sun: In winter, people like to stay indoors, which gives less sunlight. 2. Angle of sunlight: Sunlight is weak in winter, due to which enough vitamin-D is not formed. 3. Lack of food: Vitamin-D-rich foods like fish, eggs, and milk intake can also be the cause of its deficiency.

What can be its side effects?

1. Bone pain: Vitamin-D deficiency can increase the problem of bones and joint pain. 2. Muscle weakness: muscle pain and tiredness may feel. 3. Weakness of immunity: Vitamin-D deficiency reduces the body’s immunity, which can catch diseases like cold-cough quickly.

Expert’s opinion: What to do?

1. Spend time in the sun: sit in the sun for 15-20 minutes daily from 10 am to 3 pm. 2. Improve food: Diet containing vitamin-D like eggs, mushrooms, fish, milk and grains. 3. Take supplements: If you are not getting enough vitamin-D from sun or diet, then consume supplements with the advice of a doctor. 4. Do yoga and exercise: Regular exercise makes bones strong.
