The five-time champion Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated the Delhi Capitals by 59 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 do-or-die match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai thanks to an undefeated half-century from Suryakumar Yadav and a brilliant bowling display. With this victory, MI advanced to the playoffs.

The Delhi Capitals spinners Kuldeep Yadav (1/25) and Vipraj Nigam (0/25) took advantage of a slow surface, which was raised to 180/5 by Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 73 knock and Naman Dhir’s cameo. In his 73 not out off 43 balls, Suryakumar hit four maximums and seven fours.

MI didn’t get off to a strong start after being called to bat, as opener Rohit Sharma left the game after just five runs were scored in the third over. Suryakumar first put on 55 runs for the fourth wicket with Tilak Varma during a difficult stretch of play in which DC’s spinners dominated the action. Toward the conclusion, he found the ideal foil in Dhir (24 off 8 balls, 2x4s, 2x6s) to add a further 57 runs from only 21 balls.

The tide dramatically shifted in MI’s favor in the last two overs when Indian T20 captain Suryakumar and Dhir combined for a grand total of 48 runs, including five sixes and four boundaries.

In response, DC collapsed to 121 in 18.2 overs, with Sameer Rizvi making the highest score of 39 from 35 balls.

In slightly overcast conditions and on a slow pitch with the odd ball stopping and spinning, Surya was asked to bat first. He played cautiously at first, but in the last two overs, he unleashed a barrage of shots as MI rallied from 123/5 in the 17th over to reach a respectable total. Delhi had to chase 181 after Suryakumar, who hit his fifty off 36 balls, and Naman Dhir, who was 24 not out off 8 balls, hammered 48 runs in the last 12 balls of the innings. The Mumbai Indians reached 54/2 in six overs thanks to a respectable power play. MI needed a stronger effort, particularly from Rohit Sharma, since the dew would play a role in the second innings on a track where the odd ball was halting and spinning.

Quick Scores:

Mumbai Indians: 180 for five in 20 overs (Mukesh Kumar 2/48; Suryakumar Yadav 73 not out).

121 allout in 18.2 overs for the Delhi Capitals (Sameer Rizvi 39; Mitchell Santner 3/11, Jasprit Bumrah 3/12).
