Kidambi Srikanth and H S Prannoy advanced to the second round of the Malaysia Masters badminton tournament’s men’s singles competition on Wednesday. However, P. V. Sindhu, a double Olympic medalist, was eliminated in the first round.
In an 82-minute match, Prannoy fought past Japan’s fifth seed Kenta Nishimoto, winning 19-21, 21-17, 21-16. Unfazed, Srikanth defeated China’s sixth-seeded Lu Guang Zu in a grueling 23-21, 13-21, 21-11 victory to go to the next round.
After defeating Chinese Taipei shuttlers Kuo Kuan-lin and Huang Yu Kai in the preliminaries, Srikanth advanced to the men’s singles main draw.
In the men’s singles, Sathish Karunakaran, an Indian, pulled off a surprising upset by defeating Chinese Taipei’s third seed Chou Tien Chen 21-13, 21-14 in only 39 minutes. In the meanwhile, rising sensation Ayush Shetty easily advanced to the second round after defeating Canada’s Brian Yang 20-22, 21-10, and 21-8 after trailing by one game.
However, in the first round of the women’s singles competition, Sindhu lost to Nguyen Thuy Linh of Vietnam 11-21, 21-14, 15-21.
To advance to the second round, the mixed doubles team of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto defeated Indah Cahya Sari Jamil and Adnan Maulana of Indonesia 21-18, 15-21, 21-14.
Later in the day, Priyanshu Rajawat, Akarshi Kashyap, and Unnati Hooda will be in action.
In the women’s doubles first round, eighth seeds Lin Jhih-Yun and Hsu Yin-Hui of Chinese Taipei defeated Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi 21-14, 21-18. Sania Sikkandar and Rashmi Ganesh also lost to Thailand’s Pichamon Phatcharaphisutsin and Nannapas Sukklad 21-10, 21-12 in the first round of the women’s doubles.
In the women’s doubles, however, Prerana Alvekar and Mrunmayee Deshpande advanced to the second round after defeating their countrymen Vaishnavi Khadkekar and Alisha Khan. 21-13, 21-19, and 21-21.
In the men’s doubles, Chen Zhi-Ray and Lin Yu-Chieh of Chinese Taipei defeated Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi 21-13, 21-18, to send them out in the first round.
After losing to fifth-seeded Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun of Malaysia 21-15, 23-21, Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy and Sai Pratheek K were also eliminated from the men’s doubles.
