will not be allowed to take the actual trophy back to north London with them due to the strict UEFA rules in place. Spurs ended their 17-year trophy drought on Thursday night with a 1-0 victory over in the Europa League final.
Brennan Johnson scored the all-important goal in Bilbao, bundling his effort past Andre Onana after 42 minutes. Ange Postecoglou's side then dug deep defensively to keep the Red Devils at bay to put an end to their widespread criticism and trophy-less ridicule.
Despite their success, Spurs won't be able to take the real trophy back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with them. UEFA rules state that the trophy remains with the organisation following the winners' ceremony and Spurs will show off a replica on their bus parade.
Article 11.01 of the rulebook states: "The original trophy, which is used for the official presentation ceremony at the final and at other official events approved by UEFA, remains in UEFA's keeping and ownership at all times. A full-size replica trophy, the UEFA Europa League winners' trophy, is awarded to the winning club."
Instead, Tottenham will be awarded a replica trophy which cannot leave England unless officials at the club are granted special permission by UEFA. The rule states: "Replica trophies awarded to winners of the competition (past and current) must remain within the relevant club's control at all times and may not leave the club's country without UEFA's prior written consent (in this respect, clubs must comply with any request from the UEFA administration to confirm the location of the club's replica trophies).
"Clubs must not permit a replica trophy to be used in any context where a third party (including sponsors and other commercial partners) is granted visibility or in any other way that could lead to an association between any third party and the trophy and/or the competition. Clubs must comply with any trophy use guidelines that the UEFA administration issues."
The minor change will quickly be overlooked by Spurs, who were awarded 50 gold medals at the trophy ceremony for players and staff to enjoy.
Speaking about the achievement, Postecoglou said: "We're still building this team. It's a young team, we need to add experience and now we are in the Champions League. I've been trying to build a team that can be challenging for the next four or five years. Since I came here I had the belief of trying to win something and we have done that and I want to build on it."
