The Central Government has extended the application deadline for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) till December 2025, offering a significant opportunity to eligible families across India to apply for affordable housing. This move aims to benefit those who were unable to complete their applications by the previous deadline of May 15, 2025.
Here’s everything you need to know about this important update, including who can apply and how the scheme continues to support both urban and rural populations.
PMAY is the flagship housing scheme launched by the Government of India to provide affordable and permanent housing to economically weaker sections (EWS), lower-income groups (LIG), and marginalized communities. The mission is to ensure "Housing for All" by constructing pucca (durable) homes with basic amenities for the underserved population in both urban and rural areas.
Launched in 2015, PMAY has two major components:
PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U): Targets urban poor, slum dwellers, and low-income families in cities.
PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G): Focuses on rural households living in kutcha or semi-permanent houses.
The last date to apply for PMAY was previously May 15, 2025, but it has now been extended till December 2025, allowing more time for eligible families to register under the scheme. The extension comes as a relief to those who were either unaware of the deadline or were in the process of gathering documents for registration.
With this move, the government aims to maximize the reach of the scheme, particularly in states and districts where the housing need remains high.
PMAY covers a wide range of beneficiaries based on income and housing status. Here are the key eligibility criteria:
Economically Weaker Section (EWS) – Annual household income up to ₹3 lakh
Lower Income Group (LIG) – Annual income between ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh
Middle Income Group I (MIG-I) – Income between ₹6 lakh and ₹12 lakh
Middle Income Group II (MIG-II) – Income between ₹12 lakh and ₹18 lakh
Applicants must not own a pucca house anywhere in India and should not have availed housing benefits under any other government scheme.
Families living in kutcha houses
Households without adult members in the 19–59 age range
Landless laborers or those earning a livelihood through manual labor
Priority is also given to women-headed households, widows, disabled members, and SC/ST families.
Interest Subsidy on home loans under the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS)
Financial Assistance up to ₹1.2 lakh for rural homes and up to ₹2.5 lakh for urban homes
Empowerment of Women, as property ownership is often required to be in the name of a female member
Encouragement of Green and Sustainable Housing
Eligible candidates can apply through the following methods:
Visit the official website: pmaymis.gov.in for PMAY-Urban
For PMAY-Gramin, use pmayg.nic.in
Applications can also be submitted at Common Service Centers (CSCs) or municipal offices
Provide necessary documents like Aadhaar card, income proof, property documents, and identity proof
As per government data, over 92.61 lakh homes have been constructed under the PMAY initiative till now. The scheme continues to play a transformative role in improving the quality of life for millions by ensuring access to dignified housing.
The extension of the PMAY deadline till December 2025 is a significant step towards inclusive development. If you or someone you know qualifies for the scheme, this is the time to act. With financial support, subsidies, and the dream of owning a home within reach, PMAY remains a crucial pillar in India’s journey toward "Housing for All."
