If you're thinking of selling your home, whether you're selling for the first time or an experienced house-mover, you'll know that making your house as attractive as possible to prospective buyers is the best way to get the best price and the quickest sale possible.

And sprucing up your space with the latest interior design trends can help to boost your home's marketability, say the property experts at major house-builder Barratt Homes, who have examined which styles are topping buyers' wish lists in 2025.

Barratt Homes first used Pinterest data to establish the most searched-for trends and uncover which ones are gaining the most popularity. It then conducted a survey of 500 home-buyers to find out which of these design styles are the most appealing across different generations.

1. Japandi

The Japandi style "holds the crown" when it comes to current interior styles, say Barratt Homes. Japandi "blends Japan's visual artistry and philosophy with the warmth and comfort of Scandinavian hygge". This style was the most popular amongst those surveyed, with almost half (46%) embracing the beauty of imperfection it offers. It consistently ranks as the top choice across generations, with Baby Boomers (56%) and Gen Z (45%) leading the way, closely followed by millennials (43%).

Karl Openshaw, creative director at Blocc Interiors, said: "To visualise Japandi style, picture uncluttered spaces, natural light, and clean lines. Wood is the primary material, complemented by cotton, linen, wool, bamboo, stone, and even paper and rattan. When it comes to colours, neutral colour palettes reign supreme, with creamy whites and earthy browns and greens, bringing an outdoorsy feel inside.

"Low coffee tables and sofas, stoneware or ceramic vases and pots, and carefully chosen, functional, décor elements like handcrafted bowls and plates, porcelain teapots and woven rugs, create a purposeful living space."

2. Scandinavian

Standing the test of time, Scandinavian design is the second most popular style overall, with one in seven (13%) selecting it as their favourite. A perfect marriage of form and function, its serene, practical design embraces simplicity, clean lines, and natural materials.

Karl said: "Scandi design embodies clutter-free interiors, natural materials like raw wood, and woven textures like cane or rattan. High-quality furniture, hardwood or white flooring, and soft materials like sheepskin, wool, and hemp add warmth and comfort. Linen cushions and layered rugs further enhance the inviting feel.

"Neutral tones are the way to go here, with accents of earthy hues like deep blues and pale greens, misty greys, and rich browns, helping to create a calming vibe."

3. Coastal calm

Coastal style is next on the list, preferred by 25% of Gen Z respondents and 15% of millennials. Pinterest data highlights that searches for coastal living rooms have increased by 67% this year, further highlighting the growing popularity of this beach-inspired aesthetic.

Karl said: "Golden shores, soothing sunshine, blue skies, and ocean air are brought indoors with natural materials like wood, wicker, rattan and linen, painted wooden boards, seagrass rugs and woven baskets.

"The colour palette evokes the ocean: chalky whites, faded neutrals, sandy beiges, pale blues, navy and muted grays. Natural light is maximised with open layouts and wide windows to create a breezy, laidback feel."

4. Cottage charm

Pinterest searches for cottage-style living rooms have increased by 50% in the last 12 months, showing a growing desire for cosy spaces that offer warmth and comfort.

Karl said: "With no fixed rules, this quaint look evokes a feeling of nostalgia with vintage pieces, repurposed furniture, table lamps, country-coloured rugs and runners. Think charity-shop plates and glasses, Venetian chairs, antique mirrors, old clocks, and tin plates. Small windows, low ceilings, soft forms and exposed beams bring a historic charm.

"Creamy colours, blended with pastels and bright accents, floral and gingham motifs together with wallpapers, art, pictures, candles, fresh-cut flowers and lots of greenery, create a bucolic countryside inspired space."

Interestingly, this countryside trend is most loved by baby boomers (17%) and millennials (15%).

5. Industrial design

Industrial design lands in sixth place, with almost one in 10 choosing this as the most appealing style. It is most admired by Gen Z, with 18% preferring this look over any other.

Karl said: "Taking inspiration from factories, warehouses, industrial spaces, this modern, rustic look centres around natural materials like weathered leather, exposed bricks, steel beams, and metal elements. Think open floor plans, and repurposed furniture - a bookshelf made of reclaimed materials, or a sink vanity made from a dresser to create a lived-in, cool look.

Bare light bulbs, a neutral colour palette of grays, browns and creams, with clean, graphic lines make for a space full of character."

6. Bohemian

Finally, Bohemian style - this laid-back, hippy style incorporates a blend of textures, patterns, artworks, and decorations. It ranked as the third most preferred design style by Millennials- and it comes as no surprise. Boho spaces are distinctively individual: a mirror of one's personality and experiences.

Karl said: "Vibrant, artistic and eclectic, there are no fixed rules. Think vibrant tones, funky colourful tiles, rustic wooden beams, bricks in any shade. Lanterns, floor lamps and candles create a soft, warm ambient lighting for the ultimate cosiness.

"Must-haves include lush plants like pothos, snake plants, and fiddle leaf figs, naturally woven baskets and jute rugs, hanging macrame, hammocks, fringe chandeliers, and plenty of string lights for that warm, snug feeling. Cosy quilts, sumptuous velvet, and sleek leather are layered with rugs, colourful carpets, oriental patterns, and natural woven jutes for an inviting vibe."
